My Little Monkey

We've been in busy in Casa De Preston the last couple of weeks. Curious? Oh good!

On Christmas Eve we spent some time racing around getting the house ready and wrapping presents. Since we were home and I was being lazy I decided to just let Preston race around diaper-less. It was just easier to throw a long sleeve shirt and a big pair of socks on him and let him go about the rest of his day. Preston does pretty good with going pee-pee in the potty when he's naked, so we ran with it. While he was playing in the kitchen with Brad, all of a sudden he grabbed himself and began repeating, "No pee-pee floor. Pee-pee in the potty!" All the while racing for the bathroom. It was huge, progress wise. The first time that he has really shown that he knows before he has to go potty. And even more than that, he realized that he had to head for the bathroom even while he was playing and having fun.

This realization means that I'm going to bite the bullet and buy Preston some pull-ups. We're going to get serious on the potty training front. Very serious. I'm hoping to actually get to the point where we no longer have to buy diapers or pull-ups soon. The idea of not changing diapers is both terrifying and exhilarating!

You may remember from the photos that I shared of Preston's bedroom with you that we have Preston's name hanging on his wall. When I posted a friend told me that her daughter learned to spell her name because every time they went into her room they read the letters together. We've been working on doing just that since that post. We don't do it every time, but when we do we go over those letters and touch each one as we say what it is. The other day while we were all playing in there I was talking to Brad when I realized that Preston was quietly talking to himself. I shushed Brad and we both listened. He was reading off the letters on the wall, thus spelling out his name! My baby knows the letters that spell his name! Granted he did call the "n" at the end an "h". But when I asked him what it was the second time he knew it was an "n". We were so excited. Preston was pretty thrilled with all the gloating too.

Preston will probably kill me for sharing this when he's older, but I just have to tell you all. We had our first penis injury the other day. Preston had just woken up and I'd pulled his diaper off and asked him if he wanted to take his jammies off and get dressed, to which he informed me "No! Jammies on!" So I left him diaper-less and zipped him back up. Remembering to be careful of his man parts, as they were flying commando.

When it was time to get dressed, I forgot to be so careful. I think I just assumed that because it hangs down I didn't have to worry about zipping it up. I'm sure you see where this is going. I barely BARELY snagged it. But it was horrible. The moment Preston screamed was the same moment I realized what I'd just done while unzipping his jammies. He cried. I wanted to cry. Poor Preston called out, "Penis HURTS!" Which now that everything is fine seems so hilarious. There wasn't even a mark on him it all happened so quickly.
Poor kid did harbor a grudge towards me right afterwards though. Can't say I blame him. When I wanted to look to see if I'd lopped the whole thing off, heaven forbid, he told me to put his diaper on and leave him alone. In order to get him to let me put neosporin on his man parts I had to tell him his penis wanted some ice cream and he was still furious that I wouldn't just put his diaper on him. I don't know why I felt like neosporin would help, he wasn't bleeding, I didn't actually cut him. Maybe because after his circumcision that's what they had me put on it to help with the healing? Fortunately he now seems to have no memory of the whole thing. Other than that his penis wanted some ice cream, announcing that in public could be awkward!Unfortunately I do and Preston will never wear a zip up jammie without a diaper again!

I can't believe he's already two and a half...well almost he's still got a few days. Where or where did the time go?!

just wanted to send some SITS'ta love and wish you luck with the potty training ... my son won't go near the potty and he's already 3 (but has other issues) so I'm pulling for you with getting thru quickly and being diaper and pullup free!

He's a cutie!

Good luck with the potty training, my 2 year old son is nowhere near ready but I can't wait until we're diaper free!

Had to giggle at the zipper story. I never would have thought about being careful zipping down either!

Kim, it is great to read your blog as it reminds me that there are so many other in the same boat I am every single day. Kadence has been wearing big boy underwear for a few months now and is doing well going in the potty. We still have accidents but there is improvement all the time. It is hard to believe that our boys are already 2 1/2 and will soon be 3! Kadence is growing so fast and are so smart that is scares me sometimes. Now it is time for baby #2 to make his debut soon and we will REALLY be on our way.
